Background Beckenham Canine Association (BCA) was formed in 1946 but has its roots even further back in the past. Before the last war, the Bromley and Beckenham Canine Society (BBCS) was running small shows in the garden behind The Three Tuns Hotel in Beckenham, Kent. It was forced to suspend activities during the war and the society finally disbanded when all records were destroyed in a fire In 1946, the former Chairman of BBCS arranged a meeting with members of the original committee and interested parties, which resulted in the successful application to The Kennel Club (KC) for a brand new title, Beckenham Canine Association. Thus the society as it is known today was born. The Committee meetings were originally held at The Three Tuns and, in the early fifties and into the sixties, two open shows were run at Beckenham Baths and one members show in The Three Tuns grounds. In 1954 the opportunity arose to stage a mid-week 275 class open show, tented and benched at Catford Greyhound Stadium. A special bridge was built over the track to prevent damage and the show centre on the lawn amongst beautiful flower beds. The venture proved to be a great success. In addition to the shows, a highly popular dinner dance was held annually at the Knoll Country Club in Orpington. However, these good things came to an end. The dinner dances were discontinued and when Catford Stadium increased its racing calendar, a new summer venue had to be found. The BCA moved to Crystal Palace Racing Track. This was not entirely ideal: the track had an unpleasant coating and drainage was woefully inadequate. In 1971, the hunt began for a more suitable venue. Fortune favoured the society and six happy years were spent with a tented show at Norman's Park, Bromley with its splendid amenities and unlimited space. BCA Membership was on the increase and a ringcraft class was opened at Chislehurst and, after a few changes of venue, is now at the Sea Cadets Hall, Ruxley Corner, Sidcup. The ringcraft classes are still very well attended with a member's match on the last Wednesday in the month. In 1977, Beckenham stages its last show in Norman's Park in the Queen's Jubilee Year. In 1978, the mounting costs of tended shows became prohibitive and vandalism a considerable worry to the organisers. With the KC now willing to relax the rules on benching for shows over 65 classes, Tolworth Leisure Centre proved a suitable at Kingston proved a suitable venue. Following Tolworth, Beckenham was the first dog society to hold a show at Sandown Park Racecourse. An ideal venue which was hard to beat for spaciousness, unlimited parking and easy access from the M25 which drew exhibitors from a large area. The January show often had over 1200 dogs entered. The BCA celebrated its Ruby Anniversary in May 1986 with a very special show at Sandown Park and, in 1966, the BCA celebrated its Golden Anniversary; again with a special show. The KC changed the date of the Crufts Dog Show to January when it moved to the NEC at Birmingham. This clashed with Beckenham's historical January date and the racing calendar at Sandown no longer had a suitable date free. However, BCA was very fortunate in being able to obtain the nearby Kempton Park Racecourse where it held many successful shows for a few years. The BCA continues to be a successful society with a lively membership but venue changes were again forced upon them in recent years. BCA now hold their Spring Show at the Market Hall in Maidstone and their Autumn Show at White Oak Leisure Centre in Swanley. Both excellent venues with good facilities and proving to be popular. |
